More cup success for Under-16s

South Shields’ Under-16s are celebrating once more after lifting the League Cup on Sunday.

The young Mariners beat a good Consett side 4-1 at the Russell Foster Centre, in Newbottle, despite falling behind.

Consett took the lead midway through the first half with a good finish from just inside the box.

This seemed to wake Shields up, and they levelled the game up within 10 minutes with a good header from Aidan Heywood after a good ball in from Ryan Bolam.

The Mariners made three changes at the break and got on top from the beginning of the half.

They went 2-1 up with a good finish from Jake Mitchinson after another good ball in from Bolam, which was well worked between Jonny Bainbridge, Heywood and Dan Ward.

Shields continued to take the game to Consett, but had to stay vigilant at the back as they were a constant threat on the break.

The Mariners’ third goal came from Bolam, when he finished well from inside the box after another good move down the right side involving Mitchinson and Jack Donaghy.

It was Donaghy who wrapped it up with the fourth when he finished well after a great run down the left from Ben Bayles.

Coach Kevin Bolam said: “The whole squad have done fantastically well and every one of the lads has contributed to the success they have achieved so far.

“We now hope to go on and win the league, which will be very tough as we face two of our title rivals in the run-in.”

Shields need to win three from five to mathematically clinch the title, starting tomorrow night away to Fulwell Falcons.

They then take on Fulwell FC at home on Thursday, before facing Cleveland Hall away on Sunday.

That will be followed with a home game against West Auckland, and the young Mariners finish against Peterlee on Sunday, May 11, down at the home of the club’s senior side.
