South Shields vs Jarrow Roofing

South Shields enjoyed complete domination as they thrashed Jarrow Roofing 5-0 to claim the spoils in the South Tyneside derby.

While completely shutting out the Roofers at one end, Shields wreaked havoc at the other to move back to the top of Northern League Division One.

Four of the Mariners' goals were scored in the second half as they made their possession count, delighting a crowd of 1,172 at Mariners Park.

Shields battled their way into a winning position in the first half, having enjoyed much of the play.

On his home debut, Luke Hannant struck a shot wide from distance early on, while David Carson, Barrie Smith and Wayne Phillips all had decent attempts.

The Mariners almost got the goal they deserved in the 25th minute when Carl Finnigan was played in behind, but after away goalkeeper Andrew Jennison parried his initial shot, the striker was also denied when his rebound was cleared off the line.

Finnigan claimed the ball was over the line, but the officials waved away home appeals.

Hannant, who was very bright, curled an effort just wide after cutting in from the left, and it felt a goal was on its way for Shields.

Eventually, it came on the half-hour mark when David Carson danced past two defenders on the edge of the box before firing an excellent shot into the bottom corner.

In the second half, Shields were even more dominant as they really started to press home their advantage.

Within a minute of the restart, a fine move led to a shot from Carson which was excellently kept out by Jennison.

At the other end, Liam Connell was called into action for the first time on his home debut when a cross from Calvin Smith caused problems and was excellently palmed away by the goalkeeper.

Other than that, Shields were rarely troubled, with Roofing not having a shot of note. Makeshift defender Jon Shaw and Dillon Morse were solid at the back for the hosts.

The second goal arrived on 52 minutes and was very well-worked, with Finnigan finishing it off with a low drive across the goalkeeper after being played in by Robert Briggs.

The Mariners were rampant at this stage, and Hannant almost added to the scoring when he nicked the ball from Jennison before touching it wide.

Within seconds, it was three for Shields when another fine through ball played in Finnigan, who produced a similar finish for his second of the night.

Paul Chow had his first sniff of goal for the Roofers on the hour mark, but Connell was quick to sense the danger and clutched the ball before a shot could be made.

Gavin Cogdon was brought on in place of Finnigan with half an hour left, and produced some moments of outstanding quality.

One of them came when he dribbled from the halfway line before teasing Roofing's defence and then almost beating the goalkeeper, before chipping an effort which Jennison did well to hold.

The fourth goal came with 13 minutes left when Hannant brought the ball inside from the left before firing a low effort from 20 yards which squirmed under Jennison and into the net.

Cogdon got in on the act towards the end when fellow substitute David Palmer dinked the ball across the six-yard area, and the striker's header was palmed into the air by Jennison before dropping in.
