Match Report

South Shields’ remarkable run of form continued as they brushed aside second-placed Chester-le-Street for an 11th straight win.

The Mariners moved eight points clear at the top of Northern League Division Two in front of a superb crowd of 589 at Moor Park – most of whom were Shields supporters.

It was also a 10th clean sheet in 11 games for Jon King’s Mariners.

Shields scored their first goal in the 4-0 win at Esh Winning on Saturday after just 54 seconds, and took just 90 seconds to take the lead last night.

A corner was half cleared to Michael Turner on the right, and his superb cross was headed in at the back post by Ben Riding as he marked his 100th appearance for the club with a goal.

Warren Byrne made it 2-0 on eight minutes as he slid in a superb low cross from Adam Sakr at the back post.

Shields were in complete control of the top-of-the-table clash, and Lewis Teasdale went close before Jonny Wightman cleared a shot from Craig Mickle at the other end.

Byrne, Teasdale and Daryll Hall went close, and Teasdale had a header tipped onto the bar by home goalkeeper Aiden Ames as the Mariners continued to press.

Byrne was also denied by Ames from close range, while a Sakr cross was turned over his own bar by Andrew Grant-Soulsby as Shields took a two-goal advantage into the interval.

Sakr and Wightman went close in the second half, while the closest the hosts got was when Jake Stafford fired narrowly over from the edge of the box.

Mickle also hit an effort just wide, but Shields regained control, with substitute Andrew Bulford having a low shot tipped behind by Ames.

With 16 minutes left, Robert Draper saw red for the hosts for an off-the-ball incident, and Leepaul Scroggins headed narrowly over soon after.

Bulford added the third on 78 minutes as he fired a cross from David Foley into the roof of the net to wrap up the points.

Bulford was denied by the legs of Ames in the closing stages, but it mattered little as Shields sealed another victory ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Thornaby.
