Match Preview: Warrington Town vs South Shields, The Pitching In Northern Premier League

South Shields travel to Warrington Town on Saturday (3pm kick-off) as the Kevin Phillips era gets underway.

Phillips’ first game in management will see Shields take on a Warrington side in excellent form, having lost just one of their last 14 matches to climb to fifth in the Pitching In Northern Premier League.

The Mariners are two places and three points better off than Saturday’s opponents, having played two games fewer, but are well aware of the size of the task which awaits them at Cantilever Park.

Manager’s view

Phillips took charge of training for the first time on Thursday as Shields stepped up their preparations for the trip to Cheshire.

It’s the start of a busy run of fixtures for the Mariners against a number of promotion rivals, but it’s a schedule Phillips is relishing.

He said: “I used to love challenges when I was a player and this is what you’re in football for.

“We’ve got some big games coming up, but they’re the benchmarks.

“If we can get positive results against those teams it will put us in a great position moving forward for the rest of the season.

“I’m excited to pit myself against other managers who are more experienced than me at this level as well, and we can’t wait for the challenges ahead.”

Phillips is also full of praise for the response shown by the players following his appointment.

He added: “The reaction has been excellent.

“I had a good chat with them before the first session and gave them an insight into what I was looking for, and they showed that in abundance on the training ground.

“There was lots of enthusiasm and endeavour, and the tempo of training was excellent.

“They’ve had a good week’s training and they’re well prepared for the game on Saturday.”

Team news

Jordan Hunter is expected to remain out as he nears a return from a broken arm, with Myles Boney and Callum Ross also missing on Saturday due to injury.
