Match Preview: South Shields vs Washington
Washington are the visitors to Mariners Park on Tuesday as South Shields begin life under Lee Picton and Graham Fenton.
It is the first match since the managerial change over the weekend, and will see the Mariners aiming to leapfrog Shildon and North Shields into top spot in Northern League Division One.
A number of Shields’ former players could line up against them for the Mechanics, with Daryll Hall, Ibby Hassan, Lewis Galpin, Dale Connor and Andy Brown all having made the move there during the summer, as well as coach David Hall.
Washington currently sit 19th in the table, but have played just four games and will now be aiming to kick-start their season.
The Mariners are expecting a difficult encounter against a side whose season highlight so far was a 2-0 win at Newton Aycliffe in the FA Cup.
Speaking before the managerial change, Picton said: “They’ve got a few of the club’s ex-players, so they might feel they have a point to prove.
“If we can start like we started and finished the game on Saturday, we’ll have every chance of picking up another three points, but we know it will be difficult.”
Julio Arca is also expecting Washington to put up a tough fight in the game.
He said: “Players move around every season, and you’re going to play against former team-mates from time to time.
“Washington have a few lads that were here last season, and they’re going to try to come here, work hard and get a win for them, which is fair.
“We have to go again. We need to concentrate for 90 minutes, get another win and hopefully stay up there in the table.”
Kick-off at Mariners Park is at 7.30pm, and admission – to be paid at the turnstiles – is £6 for adults, £4 for over-65s and £2 for under-16s.
