Match Preview: South Shields vs Sunderland RCA

South Shields play their second of four home games in a row on Saturday when Sunderland RCA visit Mariners Park.

The Mariners go into the fixture on the back of a confidence-boosting 5-0 beating of Jarrow Roofing on Tuesday, which was their third win in a row in all competitions.

They sit second in Northern League Division One, three points behind leaders North Shields having played the same number of games.

RCA, meanwhile, are eighth, having not won in their last seven matches.

Shields joint manager Graham Fenton, though, is not expecting an easy game.

He said: “RCA will be a tough test for us, like all games. We’ve done a bit of research on them.

“We’ll certainly go into the game with a lot of confidence and hopefully with a similar sort of performance to Tuesday, we can pick up another three points.”

Fenton has been pleased with the response of the Shields players since a frustrating 1-1 draw with Newcastle Benfield a fortnight ago.

He added: “The performances over the last week-and-a-half have been good and we’ve scored a few goals.

“We’ve had a really good response from that game against Benfield, and now we’re looking to cement all the things we’ve been working on and progress. The lads are doing really well at the moment.”

Shields have been boosted by the return to fitness of Julio Arca and David Foley for Saturday’s game. Stephen Ramsey is also available again after a back injury.

Louis Storey is the major absentee, with his broken leg set to keep him out for the long-term.

Kick-off in Saturday’s game is at 3pm, with admission prices – to be paid at the turnstiles – £6 for adults, £4 for students and over-65s, and £2 for under-16s. We would very much appreciate your support.
