Match Preview: South Shields vs Marske United, pre-season friendly

South Shields face their penultimate test of pre-season on Saturday when they welcome Marske United to 1st Cloud Arena (3pm kick-off).

Heading into Friday’s match against Boldon CA in the Sam Bartram Memorial Cup – where a young side was expected to be fielded – the Mariners had won all six of their friendlies to bolster their confidence ahead of the start of the league campaign on August 14th.

The Marske match will be followed by another home game against Gateshead the following Saturday as Shields complete their preparations.

They also came up against Marske in pre-season ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, with Alex Kempster scoring a brace in an impressive 4-1 victory for the Mariners on Teesside.

Shields will be expecting a strong test against the Seasiders, who are readying themselves for their fourth season at Pitching In Northern Premier League level since their promotion from the Northern League in 2018.

They operate on tier below the Mariners in Division One East, where they will come up against fellow Northern League sides including Dunston, Hebburn Town, Shildon and Stockton Town in 2021-22.

Their first season at that level saw them finish 10th, while they were fifth in 2019-20 before the campaign was curtailed and eighth in 2020-21, having enjoyed an unbeaten start.

Marske have won four of their five friendlies so far and will follow Saturday’s game with a home fixture against Morpeth Town as they step up their preparations for the start of the season.

Shields, meanwhile, will be hoping to continue their fine form having won their opening six pre-season friendlies.

Darius Osei has been the headline act with five goals with several other players having also caught the eye as a mixture of youth and experience have shown many signs of encouragement.

Kick-off at 1st Cloud Arena is at 3pm and the turnstiles will open at 12.30pm.

Cash turnstiles will be in operation but supporters can ensure a quicker entry and help to alleviate queues by purchasing tickets before 12pm on Saturday by clicking here.

Admission prices are £6 for adults, £4 for students, over-65s and disabled supporters, and £2 for under-16s.
