Match Preview: South Shields vs Huddersfield Town XI, pre-season friendly

South Shields continue their pre-season preparations with a home game against a Huddersfield Town XI on Wednesday.

The match was arranged after teenage winger Will McCamley left the Mariners to join Huddersfield earlier this summer.

The Terriers are expected to send a youthful side, featuring McCamley, to Mariners Park for Shields’ third game in a week.

They kicked off their pre-season programme with a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland last Thursday before beating Cleethorpes Town 2-1 in the Jak Fada Memorial Trophy on Saturday.

Joint manager Graham Fenton is looking forward to welcoming back McCamley, who played for Shields’ academy between 2017 and 2019.

He said: “Will did exceptionally well for us and got himself a move to Huddersfield, so he’ll be coming back to play and he’ll be wanting to do well.

“We’re looking forward to it.

“We did some work with the group in training on Monday, because we know there are improvements to be made from Saturday.

“The lads are in the right frame of mind and it’s another important game for us as we prepare for the season.”

Goals from Lee Mason and Josh Gillies secured the Mariners’ first win of pre-season on Saturday as they came from behind to defeat Cleethorpes.

Fenton is looking for more from his side against Huddersfield.

He added: “It was a little bit flat at times (on Saturday), but we’re only a couple of weeks into pre-season so you sometimes get that.

“We’ve got quite a few weeks until the start of the season to get fitter, sharper and brighter, but one of the main goals for us on Saturday was to get our first win under our belts and we did that.

“We played some decent stuff at times and I thought the movements up top were bright.

“We moved them about and they looked really tired towards the end, so it was a good workout.”

Kick-off at Mariners Park is at 7.30pm and admission – which can be paid at the turnstiles – is £6 for adults, £4 for students and over-65s, and £2 for under-16s.
