Match Preview: South Shields vs Guisborough Town

Guisborough Town are the visitors to Mariners Park on Saturday as South Shields aim to make it three wins in a week.

The Mariners have seen off Marske United in the FA Vase and Blyth Town in the League Cup over the last seven days.

However, this will be their first game in Northern League Division One since the 1-0 defeat to leaders North Shields a fortnight ago, which left the Mariners eight points off the top in second, with two matches in hand.

Guisborough go into the game bottom of the league, but Shields joint manager Lee Picton is not expecting an easy three points.

He said: “We’ve had Guisborough watched and have prepared as well as we possibly can as a management team. We know what they’re going to be all about.

“They’re going to come here and try to make it difficult for us, as a lot of teams have done recently, and it won’t be easy.

“We’ve got to be better than we were on Tuesday against Blyth, when I was disappointed with our performance, but we had a good training session on Thursday and we’re ready to go again.”

In-form David Foley has scored five goals in his last two games, and he too insists Guisborough’s position in the table is irrelevant going into Saturday’s match.

He said: “It doesn’t really matter where they are in the league.

“It’s another game that we’ve got to get a result in, so we’ll approach it the same as any other and hopefully pick the three points up.”

Shields could hand a debut to 19-year-old winger Adam Wrightson, who joined the club on loan from Gateshead on Friday.

They will be without the injured Leepaul Scroggins (knee), Gavin Cogdon (groin) and Louis Storey (leg), but it is hoped that Jon Shaw and Dillon Morse will shrug off knocks to be available, and Anthony Callaghan will be back after being cup-tied for the last two matches.

Kick-off at Mariners Park is at 3pm, with admission – to be paid at the turnstiles – costing £6 for adults, £4 for students and over-65s, and £2 for under-16s. As this is a league fixture, season tickets, corporate and junior season passes ARE valid. We would really appreciate your support!
