Match Preview: Mickleover vs South Shields, The Pitching In Northern Premier League

South Shields face the Pitching In Northern Premier League’s form side when they travel to Mickleover on Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off).

Mickleover’s four consecutive victories have eased their relegation fears, moving them up to 18th in the table.

If the Mariners overcome their Derbyshire opponents, Kevin Phillips’ side will move to the top of the table, with this their game in hand on leaders Matlock Town.

The teams last met on the opening day of the season, when a goal from Blair Adams and two from Ntumba Massanka secured a 3-0 victory for Shields.

Manager’s view

After returning to winning ways with a 2-1 success against Atherton Collieries on Saturday, Shields will make the journey with plenty of confidence.

Phillips, though, has warned his side face a stern test of their promotion credentials against Mickleover.

Tuesday will be the Mariners’ third successive away game played on a 3G pitch, and Phillips is full of respect for the threat Mickleover pose.

He said: “It will be another tough game because Mickleover will be full of confidence.

“I’m sure they’ll be looking forward to playing us because as I’ve said before, South Shields is a scalp in this league and teams tend to raise their games.

“If we go there and do it right, we can win the match, but we’ve got to give them respect.

“They’re the home team and it’s back on a 3G pitch, so we need to be prepared and we will be.”

Shields’ relentless schedule will see them play six times in the next two-and-a-half weeks, and Phillips says all his players will have a part to play.

He added: “I’m going to need to utilise the whole squad because it’s going to be impossible for the lads just to keep going and keep going through such a hectic run of fixtures.

“There will be a bit of fatigue in there at times, so it’s important that we’re all in it together.

“With the games coming thick and fast, we’ll find ourselves in a really good position if we string a few positive results together so we need to find that consistency.”

Team news

Shields remain without Cedric Main and Callum Ross, but currently have no further injury issues.
