Match Preview: Consett vs South Shields – Mariners kick-off league campaign

South Shields begin their Northern League Division One season on Saturday when they travel to Consett.

The Mariners were beaten by Marske United last Saturday in their opening competitive game of the campaign, falling to a 3-1 defeat in the FA Cup extra preliminary round tie.

They will be hoping to bounce back at a venue they visited three times last season.

Shields won 1-0 against Consett in both the FA Vase and Durham Challenge Cup, but also suffered an agonising penalty shootout defeat in the FA Vase there following a 3-3 draw with Morpeth Town.

Consett go into Saturday’s match with some momentum, having started their season with two victories.

After seeing off West Allotment Celtic 2-0 in the FA Cup, they thrashed Ashington 7-0 on Tuesday to get their league campaign off to an impressive opening.

Among their ranks are former Shields pair Gareth Young and Lewis Teasdale, who both played a part in last season’s Northern League Division Two title win.

Shields have trained twice since last week’s defeat, and coach Mark Scott views that as a positive ahead of the trip to Belle View.

He said: “Sometimes, it’s good to get another game in quickly to bounce back, but I think at the moment it was good for us to get another training session in.

“We know what to expect from Consett.

“They’ve got some good players and I’m sure they’ll have aspirations of being at the top end of the league this season.

“It’s going to be another tough challenge, like every game.

“We know what the Northern League is like and that every game is a tough game.

“I think we’re going to have to get ourselves ready for that a little bit more than we were on Saturday.”

Manager Jon King will take charge of the Mariners for the 250th time in a competitive game.

Among those in contention for Shields are Louis Storey and David Palmer after they returned from holiday.

Kick-off at Belle View is at 3pm, and the club would very much appreciate all support at the game. The post code of the ground is DH8 7BF.
