Match Preview: Ashton United vs South Shields, The Pitching In Northern Premier League

South Shields travel to Ashton United on Tuesday as they aim to strengthen their position at the top of the Pitching In Northern Premier League (7.45pm kick-off).

The Mariners climbed to the top of the table with a dramatic 4-2 win over Nantwich Town on Saturday, with JJ Hooper scoring all four goals as Shields recovered from two down.

Ashton are 17th heading into Tuesday’s match, with games in hand on most of the teams around them.

They were 2-0 victors at Radcliffe in their most recent outing on Saturday, and they are set to provide the first of four difficult tests in a row on the road for Shields.

Manager’s view

Shields manager Kevin Phillips has warned there can be no let-up from his players as they bid to go six points clear at the top.

He said: “It’s important you don’t get too carried away in the good moments, as Saturday was.

“There is a lot of football still to be played and there are still a lot of things we can improve on, and hopefully we will.

“The games are coming thick and fast and a lot of them are away, so we need to be ready for the challenge that will represent.

“As we do in every game, we expect a tough encounter against an Ashton side which will be full of motivation, and we need to produce our best to earn the three points.”

Team news

Shields are expected to be without Cedric Main and Callum Ross for Tuesday’s game.
