Martin Scott appointed assistant manager of Mariners

The club is delighted to announce the appointment of Martin Scott as assistant manager.

The former Sunderland, Rotherham United and Bristol City left-back joins with a wealth of experience in the game.

His coaching experience includes a spell as manager of Hartlepool United between 2005 and 2006, and in the backroom staff at Barnsley in 2013. Martin is a former assistant manager of Bury.

He was also involved in the coaching set-up in the under-18s and reserve sections of Middlesbrough between 2007 and 2010.

Martin is perhaps best known in the North East for his spell as a player with Sunderland between 1994 and 1998, during which time he made 126 appearances.

He will now work alongside Shields joint managers Graham Fenton and Lee Picton.

Picton said: “Martin is a fantastic addition to the backroom staff.

“He has so much experience in the game, having been first-team manager at Hartlepool and on the coaching staff at Barnsley.

“He’s also a UEFA Pro Licence coach, and hugely respected for his work in the game.

“We’re thoroughly looking forward to working with Martin going forward.”

Martin links up with the Mariners following Gary Middleton’s decision to step down as first-team coach because of work commitments.

Picton added: “I was aware Gary’s departure may happen a couple of weeks ago, because he said he had been thinking about it because of his increased work commitments and told us so that we could put the wheels in motion if he was to step down.”

Martin watched his new team beat West Allotment Celtic 5-1 at Mariners Park on Tuesday.
