Lewis Galpin signs

By Daniel Prince

The club is delighted to confirm the signing of defender Lewis Galpin from West Auckland Town.

The 21-year-old, who can play in the centre of defence or at left-back, started his career at Gateshead, and made eight appearances for them in the Conference.

He then joined Ebac Northern League Division One outfit West Auckland, with whom he reached the FA Vase final at Wembley in 2014.

While at West Auckland, he enjoyed a defensive partnership with Daryll Hall, who he will again link up with at Mariners Park.

Galpin, who was born in South Shields and now lives in Hebburn, said: “I’m very pleased to have joined South Shields.

“The club has got ambition and wants to go places, and with me only living in Hebburn and being born in South Shields, I think it’s a good move.

“One of my main concerns about the move was dropping down to the Second Division.

“After hearing what people have been saying and where South Shields are going, though, hopefully it’ll only be the one year in the Second Division, so we’ll be able to push on.

“My aim, and everyone else’s at the club, is to win promotion at the first time of asking.

“We want to be pushing on, and I’m glad to be coming to a club that wants to do that.”

On the prospect of again linking up with Hall, Galpin added: “Daryll was good to play alongside.

“Don’t get me wrong, he was a pain in the butt at times, but we get on well and work well together.

“Hopefully we can do what we did at West Auckland here.”

Manager Jon King said: “Lewis is a top signing. He is a top First Division player and is another local lad, which is always a bonus.

“He’s one of the best local players around, so it’s great to have him here.

“He has already played with Daryll Hall, and they built up a good partnership at West Auckland, so hopefully that will be rekindled here.

“He has good pedigree, has played professionally at Gateshead and has an appearance at Wembley under his belt.

“He ticks all of the boxes for us, and has everything we’re looking for. It shows how far we’ve already come as a club that we’re able to attract a player like Lewis.”
