Jarrow Roofing vs South Shields Preview
By Bob Wray
The Mariners make the short trip to the Boldon Welfare Ground on Saturday for the local derby against Jarrow Roofing in the Ebac Northern League Second Division, with kick-off at 3pm.
This fixture is almost a home game in geographical terms for Shields supporters, and one which will no doubt enable many who are for several reasons unable to travel to Peterlee’s Eden Lane ground to attend and support the team as no doubt they would otherwise wish.
So this is an opportunity to watch their favourites in claret and sky blue, with the hope being that a large contingent of Mariners supporters are present to show their encouragement for the team.
That said, the weather has been reasonably clement this week, and there are no reported adverse pitch conditions.
Given the recent influx of new players to the Shields squad to strengthen the team, no doubt a most competitive game is in prospect, and the players will need no motivation to rise to the occasion and provide the spectators with an enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment, from which hopefully the Mariners will take something home.
In the early season fixture, Roofing ran out 5-1 winners, Shields’ heaviest league defeat this term.
However, it must be said two late goals gave the scoreline a somewhat false impression, as Shields supporters read the game, with the visitors’ centre forward, ex-Mariner Liam McBryde, being prominent.
Hopefully on this occasion, matters will be much closer and a good sporting contest will ensue, and we look forward to a good day weather wise, a good crowd to cheer both teams on and the Mariners to provide a demanding test for Roofing’s credentials and their promotion ambitions.
Stephen Ramsey will be available to lead the Shields attack, and hopefully influential midfielder Barrie Smith will be in support also, and the team with its new players as selected to make their mark in what is an eagerly anticipated encounter.
