Jarrow Roofing vs South Shields Preview
By Daniel Prince
South Shields go in search of a second win in three days tomorrow (Monday) when they take on promotion-chasing Jarrow Roofing at Boldon Sports Ground.
The fixture is almost a home game for Shields supporters, particularly with this season’s ‘home’ matches taking place in Peterlee.
The Mariners have had an up and down campaign, but put a difficult few weeks behind them by claiming a 3-1 victory at Stokesley Sports Club on Saturday.
Shaun Smith scored twice for Jon King’s side, with Adam Burnicle grabbing the other as Shields moved up to 16th in the table.
That put an end to a run of one win in 12 games in all competitions, and gave the Mariners a boost ahead of their hectic end to the season.
They will be in action again on Wednesday, with a trip to Northallerton Town, and they still have nine games yet to play before their season is out.
Opponents Roofing, meanwhile, are right in the thick of the promotion battle.
This South Tyneside derby could prove crucial to their hopes after they were beaten 2-0 at home by West Allotment Celtic on Saturday.
That kept the Roofers fourth in Northern League Division Two, five points adrift of the top three.
However, they have three games in hand on third-placed Seaham Red Star, and remain in desperate need of points to boost their promotion hopes.
Just five matches separate Roofing from their promotion dream, and one of their most comprehensive victories this season came against Shields in August.
They came away from Peterlee’s Eden Lane with a 5-1 victory.
South Shields, meanwhile, will stay 16th whatever the result, but can close the gap to the top half to eight points with a win.
