Hall makes return

By Daniel Prince

Daryll Hall has become South Shields’ third summer signing after agreeing a return to the club from West Auckland Town.

The commanding defender has joined Leepaul Scroggins and Jonny Wightman in committing to the Mariners for the 2015-16 campaign.

Hall’s capture is another coup for Shields, with the 30-year-old signing from a West Auckland side which finished fifth in Ebac Northern League Division One last season.

He was twice part of West Auckland sides which reached the FA Vase final at Wembley, and he played the full 90 minutes when they last visited the national stadium in 2014.

Hall played for Shields in the 2010-11 season, making 26 appearances and scoring one goal.

And as he explains, he has a great affinity with the club, with his father David now into his second spell on the coaching staff.

Hall said: “I’ve played for the club before, and it was a great place to be with a good fanbase.

“It’s a really well-supported club, especially when things are going well, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve spoken to the club about the plans, and there are exciting times ahead.

“It took a lot of persuading for me to drop down from the First Division to sign for Shields.

“I had a good spell with West Auckland, and it took some doing to drop down from the First Division. I wouldn’t have come if the club wasn’t going in the right direction.”

Hall’s other former clubs include Spennymoor Town, Shildon, Morpeth Town, Crook Town, Coxhoe Athletic and Sunderland RCA.

Shields has always been a club close to the defender’s heart.

He added: “It was always a great club with a very good backroom staff, and that’s still the same.

“The people who are involved are there from the goodness of their own heart, and they do a lot for you. The little things make a big difference.

“I used to come and watch South Shields as a kid when my dad was assistant manager. I was about nine-year-old.

“I went to every training session and used to join in, and watched every game. I’ve got a lot of memories with the club.”
