Gilberto rejoins club
By Daniel Prince
Gilberto Chapim has become the latest player to commit to South Shields for the 2015-16 season, with the midfielder agreeing a return to the club from Newcastle Benfield.
The Angola-born 23-year-old played for Shields between 2011 and 2012, making 61 appearances for the Mariners.
The former Jarrow Roofing, Consett, Seaton Delaval and Walker Central player, who also had a spell playing professionally in Angola with Progresso AS, says a return to Mariners Park was something he could not turn down.
He said: “The reason why I made the decision to come back to South Shields was because, as everyone knows, I’ve played for the club before and I enjoyed my time here.
“When I got the phonecall, I thought about it, but it was really a chance that I couldn’t say no to, because I enjoyed my time at South Shields and I think it’s a great club with great facilities.
“It’s also a club, as we all know, which has big ambitions for the future, so that’s my reason.
“It was a bit of a tough choice to drop down to Division Two, but I think being happy at a club and being around good people is one of the most important things.
“No disrespect to the other clubs I have played for, but it just felt like it was the right choice and the right move to make.”
Chapim added: “My main memories of my first time at South Shields are of the fanbase.
“I really like the fans here, and I hope we get the same support we did four years ago.
“I really like the ground – I think it’s a very good ground – and the surface is nice and flat, so it’s very good.
“The club itself attracted me to come back, so here I am.”
