Date confirmed for Ryton cup clash
South Shields’ Durham Challenge Cup trip to Ryton and Crawcrook Albion will take place on Wednesday, October 23.
The first round tie at Kingsley Park will kick-off at 7.30pm and will see the clubs come up against each other for the first time since March 2016, when the Mariners won 4-0 at Ryton with goals from John Grey, Stephen Ramsey, Julio Arca and David Foley.
That victory helped Shields on their way to winning the Northern League Division Two title – the first of three consecutive league championships and promotions secured by the club.
Shields reached the final of the Durham Challenge Cup last season before losing 1-0 to Shildon at the Stadium of Light, and won it in 2017, beating Billingham Synthonia in the final.
Ryton manager Tony Fawcett told the Shields Gazette that he was pleased to be drawn against the Mariners.
He said: “It’s a good draw for us and it will be good for the club.
“I think out of everyone in the cup, you want South Shields at home because they will bring the fans and they probably do that more than anyone else in the competition.
“The guys at our club work very hard and it’s a bit of a reward for them – it’s going to be a great night for our club.”
