Darlington RA Preview
By Daniel Prince
South Shields will look to build on their come-from-behind win over Billingham Town in midweek when they host Darlington RA tomorrow (Saturday).
Goals in the last 12 minutes from Leepaul Scroggins, Warren Byrne and David Foley secured a dramatic 3-2 victory for the Mariners on Tuesday, after they had found themselves 2-0 behind.
It was Shields’ first win of the season, while Saturday’s opponents have started their campaign with two victories, having seen off Alnwick Town and Tow Law Town.
Last season’s corresponding fixture resulted in a 5-3 victory for RA at Peterlee, while Shields won the reverse fixture 2-1.
Manager Jon King is expecting another difficult test, and said: “All of the games are going to be tough, as we’re now seen as a big scalp.
“There was another big crowd on Tuesday, and teams in the Second Division aren’t used to playing in atmospheres like that.
“That can lead to them raising their game, which is something we have to be aware of.
“In the two games so far, we have shown signs of nerves at some points, but we’ve got to remember that it’s a brand new group of players.
“On Tuesday, the positives far outweighed the negatives, and some of the lads who came in really staked a claim for a shirt, so we’re looking forward to the Darlington RA game.”
Shields will be boosted by the return of striker Stephen Ramsey from suspension for the 3pm kick-off at Mariners Park, but Paul Kane remains suspended.
Admission prices are £5 for adults and £3 for over-65s, while it is free for under-16s.
