Consett 0-1 South Shields – FA Vase
Adam Sakr scored a dramatic extra-time winner as South Shields marched on in the FA Vase with a 1-0 victory at Consett.
The two sides could not be separated after 90 minutes, but Sakr struck 14 minutes into the additional 30 to spark scenes of wild celebration among the hundreds of visiting supporters.
Consett became the Mariners’ third Northern League Division One scalp in the competition, and they will host leaders Morpeth Town in the next round.
Shields – who have now won their last 18 games – had started strongly, but both sides struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the first half.
The Mariners suffered a blow on 24 minutes when Julio Arca was forced off with a dead leg, but his replacement Sakr proved to be very influential.
Consett should have taken a lead into half-time, but Michael Mackay somehow fired over after beating Scott Pocklington to the ball in front of goal.
Earlier on, Wayne Phillips had curled a free-kick just over for the Mariners.
In the second half, another good Shields chance came and went when David Foley’s effort across goal was cut out and then Phillips headed wide.
Another massive opportunity fell to Foley as he was played in on goal, but goalkeeper Peter Jeffries kept out his effort.
Shields’ big travelling support continued to urge their side on, generating a superb atmosphere as the Mariners searched for a winner.
Leepaul Scroggins was the next to miss as he headed over from five yards, and the game appeared destined for extra-time.
However, deep into stoppage time, home substitute Jordan Lavery’s overhead kick appeared destined to go in before it hit the post to keep Shields’ hopes alive.
In the first half of extra-time, Mackay wasted another gilt-edged opportunity to put Consett ahead.
When a shot was cleared off the line, he looked certain to smash the ball into an empty net, but could only fire well over.
He later glanced a header wide, handing Shields the incentive to go on a foray forward of their own.
They punished their hosts on 104 minutes as Foley’s drove down the left and then sent in a superb cross which was met by the determined Sakr in the centre as he forced the ball home.
The Mariners held out for the narrow victory to spark more superb scenes as players, staff and supporters celebrated together.
Shields’ incredible winning run therefore continued, and they will look to make it 19 victories in a row on Saturday when they take on Crook Town at Mariners Park in the league.
