He was the Member of Parliament for South Shields between 2001 and 2013, and achieved high government ministerial office in his political career with the appointment of Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs 2007-2010.

He is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the New York-based International Rescue Committee.

He has been the President of SSFC since 2002, and the club is both honoured and greatly pleased for his continuing association.
