Cancer-beating author enters sponsor draw

A health professional from South Shields who wrote a book about his experience living with cancer has entered the club’s main sponsor draw.

John Pattison wrote his autobiography – called A Love Affair With Cancer – in 2006.

He was given a cancer diagnosis at the age of 18, while his daughter also battled with the disease.

John later went on to work at the same hospital he received the devastating diagnosis – South Tyneside Hospital – and currently works there as a senior clinical nurse specialist in haematology.

He would now like his book to get some more exposure, with all the proceeds going to charity and towards purchasing more copies of the book, which he also hands out free to patients at the hospital.

John said: “I entered the draw just to try and promote the book. The book is self-funded.

“The whole idea is it offers hope and inspiration for anyone who is given a cancer diagnosis, which is society’s greatest fear.

“I give copies away to anyone who is given a cancer diagnosis, and I don’t make any money from the book itself.

“It’s essentially about my experience of getting a cancer diagnosis.

“I got the diagnosis at the age of 18, and it’s about what motivated me, how I got through it, the psychological impact, as well as my daughter’s battle with the disease.

“I eventually went into nursing, and I now look after people who had the same cancer as I did.”

The club has offered John a free full page advert for the book in every matchday programme as a show of gratitude for his entry into the £100 main sponsor draw.

Anyone who would like to buy his book – priced at £8 – should visit http://www.aloveaffairwithcancer.co.uk/

The draw will be made on Monday at 10am by South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck.

The lucky winner will receive a package normally worth between £5,000 and £10,000.

Even those who are unsuccessful in the draw will enjoy benefits, with a business advertisement and web link placed on the club website, and their company contact details in every matchday programme for this season.

The winner will get a host of rewards, including their company name and logo on the Mariners’ home strip, as well as a large perimeter advertisement board at Shields’ ground, Eden Lane in Peterlee.

The logo will also feature on the front cover of every matchday programme, as well as a full-page advert inside.

The club’s main sponsor will also get complimentary tickets to all Mariners corporate events, match sponsorship of a game of their choice, and their company logo on a regular newsletter sent out to subscribers.

South Shields FC would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has entered the draw now, and would welcome any late entrants over the weekend.

Anyone who is interested in entering can contact club chairman Gary Crutwell on 07947 480054 or commercial assistant Bob Wray on 0191 537 2633.
