Beresford and Ball set for talk-in
Two North-East football cult heroes are lending their support to the club next week.
Former Newcastle United left-back John Beresford and ex-Sunderland player Kevin Ball will be the stars of a talk-in night, which will be held at The Mile bar in Brigham Place, South Shields, on Thursday, April 24.
The talk has been organised by South Shields FC, and funds raised will go towards the club’s cause.
The Mariners are still locked in talks over a return to the borough for next season, and have spent this campaign playing their Northern League Division Two ‘home’ fixtures in Peterlee.
However, they are keen to maintain a presence in the town during their absence, and held a similar night in November, which featured Newcastle United legend Peter Beardsley and ex-Sunderland star Eric Gates.
The club’s commercial assistant, Bob Wray, said: “John and Kevin are popular former players with a local affinity, and were very highly-regarded during their playing days.
“They will have lots of stories and memories to discuss, while these nights are always very humorous. They always prove to be popular events, and The Mile is an excellent venue to hold them in.
“The club is hoping for a complete sell-out of tickets, and this is another great way to raise funds as South Shields FC continue negotiations to return to the town in the near future.”
Beresford and Ball are well-known figures in the region after distinguished spells at Newcastle and Sunderland respectively.
Former left-back Beresford was part of Kevin Keegan’s swashbuckling Magpies side of the 1990s, which went so close to winning the Premier League title.
Ball, meanwhile, was a regular performer for Sunderland for nine years during the same decade, and coaches the club’s Under-21s side.
He was thrust into the limelight this season when he spent a three-match spell as caretaker manager.
The duo will talk about their playing days, while Ball will talk about Sunderland’s struggles this season as a club employee.
The night starts at 7.30pm, with tickets costing £12.50, which includes a pie and peas supper. A raffle and an auction of football memorabilia will also take place.
