A message from SSFC vice-president and bingo lottery co-ordinator Bob Scott
South Shields FC vice-president Bob Scott has hailed supporters for their continued support to the club’s bingo lottery initiative.
Bob has co-ordinated the scheme since it was launched in September 2013 as a way of raising funds during the Mariners’ first of two seasons in exile in Peterlee.
It has grown from an initial base of 48 entrants to the current figure of 247 players. Over £35,000 has been paid out in prize money over the last seven-and-a-half years and the same amount has been raised for the club, which are remarkable figures that are testament to the support the initiative has received and the dedication of Bob in continuing to ensure it runs smoothly.
The game continues to go from strength-to-strength, despite the challenges the last 14 months have imposed.
Bob said: “The bingo lottery started as a fundraiser for the club as we adapted to life in Peterlee, which was a time of huge financial difficulty for us.
“We tried to think of ways to raise more funds and we approached another club who were running a similar bingo lottery scheme for details on how it worked. It went from there really.
“For it to have raised over £35,000 and paid out over £35,000 is incredible and I’d just like to say a personal thank you and a thank you on behalf of the club to everyone who has supported it over the years, and continue to support it.
“The first-team players and staff from across the club also take part in it and play a major role in ensuring the continued success of the game, so a massive thanks go to them too.”
The game was suspended between March and September 2020 as a result of the first coronavirus lockdown, but has since returned and again proved to be a regular source of income for the club.
Over £5,700 has been raised through the bingo lottery since the start of 2020 despite that six-month suspension, with Bob having redoubled his efforts to ensure it has continued despite the various challenges of the pandemic.
Bob added: “This has has been a vital and regular source of funds for the club and also provided some very welcome jackpots to participants.
“It has surpassed my expectations from when we started.
“We decided to continue it when we returned home because, as a committee, we felt it was important to continue with our fundraising efforts and to do everything we could to help the club in whatever way we could.
“Thanks to the support we have received, the jackpots and therefore the funds raised for the club have continued to improve.
“The support has been unbelievable.”
The highest jackpot paid out so far has been £1,131, with the game based on each Saturday’s National Lottery draw.
The latest prize was won last weekend, meaning a new game is starting this Saturday.
Participants select six numbers between one and 59, and can also enter with more than one set of numbers for £1 per week per line.
Each Saturday, any numbers which come out on the National Lottery draw are ticked off until the first participant(s) match all six of their selections, therefore winning the prize.
Entry tickets can be obtained by calling Bob on 07920 554377 or sending an email to email@example.com. Cash, cheque and bank transfer payments are acceptable, and can be arranged on an individual basis with Bob.
